Fuzzy Guarding Kabal

In Kabal’s Clean Cut variation, he gains access to Low Hook Grab, or BackForward2. This is a low-hitting Special Move that can be used to create mixups within Kabal’s strings. With proper defense, most of these mixups can be fuzzy guarded due to how quick the Low Hook Grab is.

The first mixup is Forward+2,2,4 and Forward+2,2 Low Hook Grab. The last hit of Forward+2,2,4 is an overhead attack that has a start-up of 22 frames. Low Hook Grab has a start-up of 15 frames, meaning that it will hit 7 frames earlier than the overhead. In order to fuzzy guard this, you must block low first, then block high.

The next mixup is Forward+4,1+3 and Forward+4 Low Hook Grab. This mixup is a little more difficult to defend against because of how quick Forward+4 is. Kabal’s Forward+4 is a 9 frame mid so you must immediately be ready to fuzzy guard after blocking it. The last hit of Forward+4,1+3 is an overhead attack that has a start-up of 21 frames. Since Low Hook Grab hits in 15 frames, it will hit 6 frames earlier than the overhead. Similar to the previous mixup, to fuzzy guard this you must block low first, then block high.

Kabal’s strongest mixup is Back+1,2 and Back+1 Low Hook Grab. The second hit of Back+1,2 is an overhead attack that has a start-up of 16 frames. Low Hook Grab has a start-up of 15 frames, so there is only a 1 frame difference between the overhead and low. This mixup cannot be fuzzy guarded.

The best thing to do here is to block high most of the time because Low Hook Grab only does 10% damage and sends you fullscreen, whereas the overhead can lead into a combo. When blocking Low Hook Grab, you’ll be able to punish it for a full combo as it is -17 on block.
