Kung Lao is a high-damaging strike/throw character that relies on using his hat for pressure. His hat Special Moves can be used for setups on knockdown, while his teleport and divekick allow him to control the air and easily approach opponents.
Basic & Kombo Attacks
12, 2, 21212
Used to punish unsafe moves. 2 can be staggered. 21212 is +1 on block and can be hit confirmed into a combo. Since the first two hits of 21212 are high attacks, it can be easily punished up-close so it’s best to use at a distance.
F1, F12, F13, F13U2
This is a mid attack with decent range. F1 has a start-up of 10 frames making this a very quick mid. F1 is also -5 on block and can be staggered. F12 is safe on block but cannot be comboed off of. F13 is unsafe on block but has pushback and can be hit confirmed into a combo. F13U2 is safe on block but has an interruptable gap. Only use F13U2 to counter opponents trying to punish F13.
Kung Lao’s longest reaching attack. All hits are unsafe on block, but becomes a Krushing Blow if used as a Kounter or Punish. This string is best used to whiff punish your opponent.
A double-hitting mid attack with decent range. F4 has a start-up of 14 frames and is only -3 on block, allowing you to poke afterwards to counter slower attacks. F4 can be hit confirmed into a full combo.
Spin – DF1
Mainly used as a combo starter or to extend combos. Very unsafe on block. When Amplified, it deals more damage and advances forward.
Hat Toss – BF2
A high projectile that is used to check opponents’ movement.
(Air) Shaolin Drop – D4
A divekick that allows Kung Lao to attack from the air. Very unsafe on block. When Amplified, it deals more damage and becomes a Krushing Blow if it hits twice in a row.
Teleport – DU
A teleport that allows Kung Lao to attack from behind the opponent. Can lead into 4 different attacks. Hat Swipe, or 1, is a high attack that is +2 on block. Heel Flip, or 2, is an overhead attack that is -5 on block. Shaolin Slam, or 3, is a throw that is punishable if crouched. Wutang, or 4, is a slow mid attack that is -4 on block and becomes a Krushing Blow if the opponent was just hit with Shaolin Slam. Teleport can be delayed when Amplified.
Fatal Blow – Beaten and Broken
Kung Lao’s Fatal Blow is a quick, advancing mid attack that travels half-screen.
Orbiting Hat – DB1
Surrounds Kung Lao with a moving hat that is -7 on block. Becomes extremely advantageous on block when used on whiff first. Can lead into a combo on hit. Uses 1 bar of Defensive Meter and 1 bar of Offensive Meter.
Guided Hat – BF2
A projectile that can be directed upwards or downwards. Guided Hat is a high attack when not directed. When directed upwards, it hits aerial opponents. When directed downwards, it becomes a mid attack.
Z Hat – DB2
A multi-hitting mid projectile that has very slow start-up and travels in a Z motion. The last part hits low. Z Hat is -7 on block. When Amplified, becomes +20 on block and is more advantageous the farther it’s used. Can be cancelled.
(Air) Teleport – DU
Allows Kung Lao to use his Teleport in the air.
