Shang Tsung is a hybrid footsie and zoning character. His many projectile attacks allow him to control space and keep opponents out. He also has great pokes, mixups and pressure up-close making him a threat anywhere on the screen. To be able to master Shang Tsung, you will want to be able to know how to use every character because of his ability to transform into his opponents.
Basic & Kombo Attacks
11, 112, 114
Can be staggered. 112 is +6 on block and creates a frame trap with Far Ground Eruption and Soul Steal. 114 is -8 on block with decent pushback and is used to punish unsafe moves.
B11, B112, B1D2
A decent mid attack that can be hit confirmed into a combo. B11 is unsafe on block. B112 is safe on block but can be Flawless Blocked. B1D2 is a safe on block overhead and becomes a Krushing Blow if the overhead chop hits by itself.
Can be staggered. 214 is safe on block and has great pushback.
F24, F242, F243
Slow, advancing mid attack that can be hit confirmed into a combo. F24 is a low attack that can be used as a mixup with B1D2. F242 is +4 on block but can be Flawless Blocked. F243 is safe on block.
A double low attack that can be hit confirmed into a combo. Can be used as a mixup with B1D2. 3U2 is unsafe on block but can be cancelled into Amplified Ground Eruption to create pushback. 3U2D2 is unsafe on block but has great pushback.
A low attack that can lead into an overhead or low. B3U4 is a slow overhead but can be interrupted by an attack or Flawless Blocked. Can be hit confirmed into a combo. B3D4 is a safe low attack that can be used as a mixup with B1D2.
A safe, advancing overhead attack that can be used as a mixup with F4.
An advancing high attack that is +5 on block and can be used as a mixup with F3.
Fire Skull – BF1
A high projectile attack. Fires a second projectile when Amplified. In Warlock, can be Amplified twice to fire an additional mid projectile and becomes a Krushing Blow if only the final projectile hits.
Crashing Flames – DB1
A multi-hitting mid projectile attack that fires from above. Fires an additional projectile when Amplified.
Soul Steal – BF2
A quick half-screen mid attack that temporarily transforms Shang Tsung into his opponent. While transformed, Shang Tsung receives a damage boost. Duration and damage are increased when Amplified. Mainly used as a combo ender.
Corpse Drop – DF3
An overhead projectile attack that fires from above. Can be directed Close, Mid, Far or Very Far. Does an additional low attack when Amplified.
Sorcery Rush – BF4
Mainly used as a combo ender in the corner.
Fatal Blow – Shapeshifter’s Barrage
Shang Tsung’s Fatal Blow is a mid attack that does great damage.
Ground Eruption – DB1
A multi-hitting mid projectile attack that fires from the below. Used as a combo starter and fires an additional projectile when Amplified. Unsafe on block with good pushback. Can be Flawless Blocked on the 2nd hit. Can be directed Mid or Far. Replaces Crashing Flames.
Screaming Soul – BF1
A slow, high projectile attack that knocks the opponent down on hit. Can be delayed. Can be cancelled at the cost of 1 bar of Defensive Gauge. Becomes a mid attack when Amplified.
Scatter Souls – DF3
A slow, mid attack attack that can be delayed or cancelled. Does more damage and gives more advantage on block the longer it’s delayed. When Amplified, becomes a projectile that stuns the opponent long enough to follow up with a combo.
Soul Well – DB2
Creates a floating object that temporarily stays on the screen. When used again, restores Shang Tsung’s health for each hit landed on the opponent while active.
